Leader Interview

Leader photo 1

Jacqueline Meraz

Supervisor for the Triage Navigator Program for TLCS (Transforming Lives, Cultivating Success)

Jacqueline supervises the Triage Navigators

What type of route did this leader take?

  • It was straightforward

    "It was straightforward."

  • It was windy

"It took a while to figure out."

  • It was circuitous

    "I tried everything."

Leader's Work Life

She supervises the Triage Navigators that are located in the Hospitals (UCD, Sutter Medical Center, Kaiser South, Mercy San Juan, Mercy General, and Methodist hospitals). All of her staff are called triage navigators and they work at these hospitals in the emergency rooms. The program is contracted with Sac County and it offers mental health linkage for clients that come into the Emergency rooms, jail and we also work with Sacramento PD.

Leader's Noise

Her noise was and still is self doubt. For her current position her self doubt comes when she gets resistance from her staff and then when she hears constructive criticism From her supervisor. She thinks to herself, " is this for me?" Or can I do this? Her answers are yes I can do this and no this is not something I want to do after a few years. She is in it for the experience and the money But she does not want to work in community mental health forever.

Advice from my Leader

Don't let anyone tell you you can not do it! Because you can and you will. Jacqueline actually graduated young when she got her BA. However she waited about 6 years to go back for her masters degree..... She tried to get into to SAC State in 2010 for social work and got wait listed then eventually was denied. She applied for University of San Francisco in 2013 and was accepted for clinical psychology But during the time that she graduated with her BA in 2008 to 2014 she experienced a lot.... Got married, got divorced, got cancer, graduated in the heart of the recession where there were no jobs, her GPA was a 2.88......way less than ideal to get in to grad school so she purposely took jobs that would offer amazing experience ( working with sex offenders and on a national suicide and crisis hotline) and she did her own personal work by actively seeing a therapist ..... her point is, if you want something bad enough and you put in the work....you will achieve it!

My Cold-Calls

My Cold-Calls

I have learned that meeting new people can be scary but in the end it is fun to meet new people. You never know, you might get to know things that you maybe didn't know before

Before and After

…

I was nervous but in the end it was all worth is. I called around several places but ended up finding Jacqueline through some coworkers. I thought her story was great so we met for coffee.
